CMU students’ holiday album

A group of local music students from Chamber Music Unbound’s “Honors Strings” program is releasing a CD called “Festive Strings,” a collection of seasonal and holiday favorites. All proceeds from the sale of the disc, which is priced at $12.99, will help cover the costs of the students’ 2013 musical trip to Germany. And, as CMU points out, it makes a great gift or stocking stuffer. Buy your copy online at http://felicitrio.com/cds.html.

DSES Extravaganza goes Cajun

This year’s annual Disabled Sports Eastern Sierra Island Extravaganza goes Cajun, including live music by the hit band Gator Beat. This year’s fundraiser takes place Saturday, Dec. 8, at Canyon Lodge starting at 6 p.m.

DSES’s cajun-flavored evening comes complete with dinner, live music, raffle and silent auction. Tix: $65, raffle tix $5 each, available at the Booky Joint, DSES Second Chance Thrift Shop in Mammoth, the DSES office at MMSA or online at www.disabledsportseasternsierra.org.

A Christmas Carol … sort of

Mammoth Lakes Repertory Company, Tiny Tim and Scrooge and all Dickens’ loveable characters invite you to this unique and hilarious rendering of the classic holiday tale: “Charles Dickens’ ‘A Christmas Carol: A Traveling Travesty in Two Tumultuous Acts!'”

The show opens Dec. 6 at the Edison Theatre in the Ski Museum across from Cerro Coso College in Mammoth, and plays Thursday through Sunday, Dec. 23. Performances are Thursday-Saturday at 7 p.m. nightly, and Sunday at 4 p.m. only.

Brought to you by the members of the Styckes-Upon-Thump Repertory Company’s “15th Annual Farewell Tour,” behold as the seasonal play performance goes south and it’ll take a lot more than “God bless us, everyone” to save the company’s hopelessly humbug-ridden roller coaster ride! Call 760.934.6592 for reservations.

Christmas tree permits

Christmas tree cutting permits are now available for $5 per tree with a limit of one tree per household, from cutting areas on the Bridgeport District of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest and Bureau of  Land Management lands.

Permits for that area are available at the Bridgeport Ranger Station, Mammoth Lakes Welcome Center and the White Mountain Ranger Station.

For the Bureau of Land Management lands there are tree cutting areas near Benton. Permits for these areas are available from the joint BLM/Forest Service Visitor Center (White Mountain Ranger Station) in Bishop and the Mammoth Lakes Welcome Center.  Maps, directions to cutting areas, and regulations for cutting Christmas trees may be obtained at the issuing office.

Friends of Education Dinner

The 2012 Mammoth Lakes Foundation has special festivities planned for its Friends of Education Celebration on Dec. 15. The annual event pays tribute to both a Founder of the Year for their unprecedented support and dedication to education, the arts and the community, and a Volunteer of the Year.

This year the event takes place in the Edison Theatre and includes a performance of “A Dickens’ Christmas Carol: A Traveling Travesty in Two Tumultuous Acts.” An added feature of this year’s event is a special Diamond giveaway. Each attendee can purchase a Diamond Raffle ticket and one lucky winner will walk away with a certified diamond.

Other prizes include two VIP tickets to the July 5-7, 2013 Mammoth Food & Wine Experience. To purchase tickets to the Friends of Education dinner, call 760.934.3781, or visit www.mammothlakesfoundation.org/theatre.html.

Angel Giving Tree

The Angel Giving Tree ensures that low-income children receive gifts for Christmas. You can participate by selecting a child’s name at Vons from the Angel Giving Tree.

Last year there were 40 children whose names were not selected, so organizers are asking you to select two names and buy less for them.

Bring gifts to the Health Department by Wednesday, Dec. 12. This year the Health Dept. offers the option of giving a gift certificate to Rite Aid, Kmart or the Cast Off to allow the parents to shop for their own children.

Drop off a certificate at the Health Department if you don’t want to shop for a child, but would like to supplement a gift the child receives. You can receive an income tax donation by writing a check to Mono County Office of Education and MCOE will purchase the gift certificate.

Volunteers are needed for gift sorting and distribution. Call Mary Jo @ 760.934.2253 to help.
