The younger set of Mammoth Mountain Ski Team took part in the USSA/Marriott Alpine U18 Nationals opening ceremonies and public draw held, Wednesday, March 6 at the Village. The Mighty Mite, U10, and U12 athletes decked out in their signature orange parkas helped carry signs representing participating teams and assisted in handing out race bibs during the public draw. According to Lindsay Barksdale, MMST Head U10-12 coach, “It is a huge deal for Mammoth to be hosting the 16 and 17 year-old National Alpine Championships. If an athlete wins two races at U18 Nationals then they will be named to the US Ski Team.” Barksdale stressed that the talent here is “amazing” and then added, “It will be a great week to come out and watch some ski racing.” Racing action for he U18 Nationals will continue through Tuesday, March 12 at Mammoth Mountain.

MHS Skiers grab podium shots at State Championships

In a last ditch effort to hold the CNISSF Championships men and women’s giant slalom ski races, Wednesday, March 6 at Mt. Shasta, Calif., a jury decision reduced the standard two run event to a one run race.  After almost a full day of race delays the women’s race started at 1:00 pm followed by the men’s race at 2:45 pm. By the end of the long day Mammoth had placed five members in the top 15 with Sierra Gilfoy 9th and Chelsea Foulke 13th for the women and Kevin Wolfe 7th, Ryan Foulke 8th and Justin Wallasch 10th for the men. The MHS skiers also took a third place overall team result in the GS for the women against 22 teams, while the men captured second place as a team against 27 other teams from around the state.
