The Whittier Cardinals defeated the Bishop Broncos 21-17 and 21-18 in an amazing final match of the annual Mammoth Invitational Volleyball Tournament held last weekend. The two had battled earlier in the day in the winner’s bracket final with Whittier edging Bishop in a thrilling back and forth 3 set match. The Kern Valley Broncs took third place by narrowly defeating the host Mammoth Huskies 21-11, 17-21, 15-11 in another closely contested match.
“We were very pleased with the overall level of play at this year’s tournament”, said Mammoth Head Coach John Morris. “This is probably the strongest group of teams we have ever had.” The tournament began on Friday afternoon with two pools of five teams each, with Saturday’s play consisting of a 10 team double elimination tournament seeded based on Friday’s results. Other teams in the tournament included Rancho Christian (Temecula), Yosemite (Oakhurst), Rosamond, California City and Bishop’s JV.
“Whittier and Bishop were clearly the best two teams in the field” Morris said. “Our Varsity played very well for this early in the season, considering that all teams in the tournament are in higher divisions than Mammoth. We were especially proud of our young JV team, who played all Varsity teams and took both of their Saturday matches to 3 games before losing by very close scores.”
The Huskies travel to California City Sept. 20 – 21 for the annual Cal City tournament.
