Letters to the Editor
Let’s see the record
Dear Editor:
Recently I attended a school/parent organization meeting and Mono County Sheriff candidate, Ingrid Braun, was given the opportunity to introduce herself to the group as candidate for Mono County Sheriff. Well spoken, she outlined her previous law enforcement background in Southern California and subsequent employment with the Mono County Sheriff. Ms. Braun, just short of her one year probationary term, indicated that with no cause or reason, she was terminated. After Ms. Braun made a few despairing comments about the Mono County Sheriffs, I was left wondering, if in fact, there was more to the story?
I question her claim because of my history in dealing with the Mono County Sheriff’s Department. I have had interactions with various department heads related to a service based business relationship we conduct with the Sheriff Department. Additionally, due to some situations pertaining to former employees, I have had a “bird’s eye view” to observe the manner in which those in command conduct themselves. Each situation resulted in earnest interest to understanding the issues, consideration of the facts, weighing the elements and then coming to a well thought out conclusion. Never had there been a decision made without thorough analysis. Assuming this same process was used to determine the viability of Ms. Braun’s employment, it left me to ponder the Candidate’s statement that she was let go for absolutely no reason.
Apparently, the Department is unable, for legal reasons, to comment on why Ms. Braun was terminated. However, the Candidate can request that her file be released, for general review, in order for voters to assess the facts. I also believe that The Sheet could examine the file associated with her termination, assuming Ms. Braun has nothing to hide, and we the voting public can be better equipped to cast a vote in the upcoming election June 3rd. In conclusion, I believe that before voting incumbent Sheriff Obenberger or Candidate Braun into such an important position of power, we should examine all of the facts. Why was Candidate Braun terminated from the Mono County Sheriff’s Department?

Mr. Margulies indicates Ms. Braun told the audience at the school/parent meeting that she was terminated near the end of her probationary period. She states she wasn’t advised of any reason(s).
Generally, probationary employee’s are told that they failed to meet the terms and conditions required of their probationary employment. Specific reasons are not required and generally avoided, as Ms. Braun indicates was her experience.
Ms. Braun can sign a waiver authorizing the release of any confidential information considered in deciding to terminate her employment. At least that information, if discovered, would allow the voters to better understand what has transpired.
Nonetheless, Ms. Braun’s apparent lack of understanding probationary failure is confusing. Or is it?
