According to a statement from the Mammoth Lakes Police Department, the MLPD is currently investigating several burglaries from Snowcreek Athletic Club (SAC) and the Tallus Resort complex. Snowcreek management told MLPD officers last week they suspected Matthew Todd Underwood, 50, of Mammoth Lakes, was removing items from the SAC’s sport shop, spa and lost-and-found. In addition, Underwood had also recently been named as a suspect in the theft of numerous items from a corporate storage unit at Tallus, where he was also employed.
Apparently Underwood’s not QUITE as good at hiding his loot as Bernie Madoff. MLPD served two search warrants at Underwood’s residence, and recovered many of the items reported missing from SAC and Tallus. MLPD said the investigation is now focused on his other recent jobs in condominium and hotel management, also in Mammoth.
Upon hearing he’d been named as a suspect, on Jan. 13, Underwood left SAC via a back door to avoid MLPD officers. He then obtained legal counsel, reportedly planning to turn himself in to authorities this week.
The MLPD still holds a valid arrest warrant for Underwood on charges of burglary and possession of stolen property. Anyone with information should contact Officer Daniel Hansen or Detective Doug Hornbeck at the MLPD, 760.934.2011. -Press Release
