Mammoth Mountain Ski Area officially announced today that United Airlines will be offering a non-stop, daily flight from San Francisco International Airport to the Mammoth Yosemite Airport this winter. The flight will give Bay Area residents a convenient mode of access to Mammoth Lakes, and will be operated by United Express carrier, SkyWest Airlines using 66-seat CRJ700 regional jets. The first flight is set to depart on Thursday, Dec. 16.

Prior to the launch of this new flight, San Francisco residents had to drive to San Jose to catch a flight to Mammoth, according to MMSA CMO Howard Pickett. “Now they will have convenient access much closer to home,” he said in a press release from MMSA.

As for the rest of the 2010/11 winter flight lineup, MMSA Public Relations Manager Dan Hansen said the contracts are being finalized this week. Hansen was able to tell The Sheet that the Reno flight was canceled this year. Last season Mammoth saw two, non-stop, daily flights from LAX, one non-stop daily flight from San Jose and one from Reno, as well as direct, same-plane, one-stop service from Seattle and Portland all through Horizon Airlines.

The flight from SFO to Mammoth Yosemite Airport will depart each day at 3:50 p.m., arriving in Mammoth at 4:56 p.m., and depart from Mammoth to SFO at 5:27 p.m., arriving back in the Bay Area at 6:40 p.m. For more information or to reserve a seat contact United Airlines.

Too bad the cheapest flight I’ve seen so far from SFO to MMH is $188 r/t mid, non-holiday week. I’m sure that won’t deter many in the Bay Area – especially those who’ve never experienced Mammoth but the ~1 hour or so door-to-door time savings doesn’t seem worth it.
